In the fields of RF and microwave technology, Continuous Wave (CW) refers to an operating mode in which a power amplifier continuously outputs an RF signal in a stable, uninterrupted state. Unlike Pulse Mode, where the signal periodically switches "on" and "off," an amplifier in CW mode operates continuously with a 100% duty cycle, maintaining a signal that is unbroken along the time axis.
Key characteristics of a CW signal include:
- Constant amplitude: Output power does not vary over time
- Constant frequency: Typically a single-frequency sine wave (though it can also be used for wideband frequency sweeping).
- Continuous energy output: No interruptions or pauses.
Primary application scenarios for CW mode
1. EMC Radiated Immunity Testing
In EMC certification testing, power amplifiers must continuously output high-power signals across a wide frequency band (e.g., 80 MHz to 6 GHz) to generate a uniform electromagnetic field via an antenna, thereby verifying the electronic device's immunity to interference. As the testing process often lasts from tens of minutes to several hours, the long-term stability requirements for CW power amplifiers are extremely high.
2. Satellite Communication (SATCOM)
Whether for satellite uplinks or downlinks, communication signals are transmitted continuously in CW mode (or as modulated CW carriers), requiring power amplifiers capable of stable, long-term operation. Coreal’s 10.7–12.7 GHz Ku-band power amplifier series is specifically designed for this application.
3. Electronic Jamming (CW Noise Jamming / Communication Blocking)
In electronic warfare, wideband CW noise jamming requires power amplifiers to continuously output high-power signals to raise the noise floor of enemy receivers. Communication blocking (such as GPS jamming) similarly requires continuous transmission of co-frequency signals to suppress the target receiver.
4. Antenna and OTA Measurements
When measuring antenna gain and radiation patterns in a microwave anechoic chamber, power amplifiers are required to continuously drive the transmitting antenna. This generates a stable, pure test signal, ensuring the accuracy and repeatability of the measurement results.
5. RF Heating and Industrial Applications
In industrial scenarios such as induction heating, plasma processing, and material drying, RF energy is output continuously in CW mode, acting directly upon the material or gas.
6. Medical Equipment (MRI, RF Ablation)
MRI systems require CW power amplifiers to drive RF coils and generate a continuous high-frequency magnetic field; RF ablation equipment requires amplifiers to continuously output RF energy to heat and destroy diseased tissue.
How do you determine if your application requires a CW power amplifier?
- Requires simulation of a real-world electromagnetic interference environment (EMC testing)
- The transmitted signal itself is a continuous carrier wave (satellite communication, broadcasting)
- Requires continuous application of RF energy to a target (jamming, heating, medical treatment)
- The testing process requires stable signal excitation over an extended period (antenna measurement, material testing)
