Pulse Mode is an operating state for RF power amplifiers in which the amplifier functions in a periodic "on-off" manner; it releases immense peak power within an extremely short time window while remaining "silent" during the rest of the cycle.

In pulse mode, the amplifier's output is not a continuous RF signal but a series of periodically repeating RF pulses. Each pulse comprises three key phases:

*Rising edge: The signal rises rapidly from zero to peak power.

*Pulse top: The signal is maintained at the peak power level (for the duration of the pulse width).

*Falling edge: The signal drops rapidly from peak power back to zero.

This operating mode enables the amplifier to output power levels far exceeding its continuous operating capacity within very short timeframes, making it widely applicable in scenarios requiring "instantaneous high power," such as radar detection and electronic warfare.

Key Parameters of Pulse Mode

1. Pulse Width (τ)

Pulse width refers to the duration of each pulse, typically measured in microseconds (μs) or nanoseconds (ns). Radar system pulse widths range from tens of nanoseconds to hundreds of microseconds; a shorter pulse width yields higher range resolution, while a longer pulse width results in higher average power.

2. Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) and Pulse Repetition Period (T)

Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) is the number of pulses repeated per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). The Pulse Repetition Period (T) is defined as T = 1 / PRF, representing the time interval between the start points of two adjacent pulses.

3. Duty Cycle (D)

The duty cycle is one of the most critical parameters in pulse mode, defined as Duty Cycle (D) = Pulse Width (τ) / Pulse Repetition Period (T). It represents the proportion of total time that the amplifier is actively "working." For example:

If the pulse width is 10 μs and the pulse repetition period is 100 μs, the duty cycle is 10%. This means the power amplifier outputs power for only 10% of the time, remaining in a "rest" state for the remaining 90%.

4. Peak Power (P<sub>peak</sub>) vs. Average Power (P<sub>avg</sub>)

Peak Power: The maximum instantaneous power reached during the pulse duration.

Average Power: The power averaged over the entire pulse period.

The relationship between the two is:

Average Power = Peak Power × Duty Cycle

For example: A pulse power amplifier with a peak power of 2000 W and a 10% duty cycle has an average power of only 200 W. This means the amplifier can output power far exceeding its thermal dissipation capacity for very short durationsbecause heat accumulation is determined by average power rather than peak power.
